Makara Sankaranti – Uttarayan

Makara Sankranti or Uttarayan, is a festival in the Hindu calendar, dedicated to the deity Surya (sun). It is observed each year in January. It marks the first day of the sun’s transit into Makara (Capricorn), marking the end of the month with the winter solstice and the start of longer days. This is considered to be the most holy festival of the year.

The Sun god has played an important role in Hindu tradition, and the Gayatri Mantra from the Rig Veda is dedicated to Savitr — a form of the Sun god. At the same time, the sun is also an energy-giver, and, therefore, significant outside of the religious connotation.
